The Origin of International Labor Day and Clothing

International Labor Day (also known as "May 1 International Labor Day") originated from the struggle for rights and interests of American workers in the 19th century. On May 1, 1886, 350,000 workers in Chicago and other places in the United States launched a general strike, demanding an eight-hour working day, but they were violently suppressed, which is known as the "Hay Market Incident". To commemorate this movement, the Second International Paris Congress in 1889 officially designated May 1st as the International Labor Day, symbolizing the spirit of unity and struggle of workers all over the world. At present, more than 80 countries around the world regard this day as a legal holiday, and China has designated May 1st as Labor Day since 1949.

Historical symbolic significance
In the early workers' movement, workers often took part in strikes and parades in uniform work clothes, which became a symbol of class identity and unity. For example, in the Chicago strike in 1886, textile workers were one of the main forces, and their industrial clothing (such as coarse cloth tooling) indirectly became the sports symbol.
